Going Gray
It’s a thing now y’all.
I didn’t know that. I just knew I was ready to move to the next stage of life, whatever that might be. Have you ever known you needed to make a change that would require a period of transition, and not known what the process would actually look like, but you took the first step anyway?
That was the case here. My stylist and I talked about it for months. She said it could take up to a year to fully get to my gray. “We have no way of knowing what color it will be the first few times.”
While I sat through the first 4-hour process, as she checked it, she said, “I just hope it doesn’t come out bright orange.” Yikes! That’s a possibility?!?!
But I felt a new sense of freedom when I walked out with the new color. And, no, it wasn’t bright orange. Eventually, I’ll save time, money, and frustration. For now, I’m taking a risk.
Although I think I look like a 1960s folk music has-been in this photo (after all, I’m from Dallas and we love BIG hair here), I kinda like it.
I’ve since discovered some big-named female celebrities are also #GoingGray. (Men have owned their gray all along, most men anyway.)
I’m ready to continue on in this second half of life with my authentic, true, original (well not original as in the same color I had in the 1950s and 60s) but original as in the hair now closest to my scalp is the original color formed by the natural processes of my body. And it will probably keep changing anyway.
Average life expectancy for women now reaches past the age of 80, and it’s inching closer to the age of 90 every year. Since 1980, the percentage of women living past 90 has almost tripled.1 When you think of living to 90, that would make years of age 60+ a third trimester of life. Just think of that. Women in their 60s possibly have one-third of their life left. 2
If that bit of information hit just a little too close to home, I have a question for you.
How are you living your second half or your third trimester of life? With dread? In fear? Do you feel excited? Is there anticipation? Are you at least somewhat disciplined in eating and staying active? Or are you just couch potato-ing it?

I don’t recommend reading the link in footnote #1. We want to get away from doom and gloom. But being an honest writer, I had to give credit where credit is due.
